TIPS
WHEN COMPARING PRE-FINISHED AND SITE-FINISHED FLOORING
PRE-FINISHED
SITE-FINISHED
Pros
Consistent Factory colors
and controlled environment when applying stains and polyurethane.
Longer warranty from
manufacturer. Some finishes have warranties up to 25 years due to
aluminum oxide in the polyurethane.
Floor is completed when it
goes down, and eliminates the 4 - 5 days of sanding and finishing.
You can walk on it right away.
Less dust is created.
No fumes from the stains and polyurethane.
Color and luster are easier
to match if repairs are needed.
Pros
Custom colors, designs and
finishes may be applied.
Sanded after installation to
create a smoother feel between boards.
Inventory is not a problem.
A greater variety of board
widths and wood choices is available.
Easier to clean
New manufacturers wear warranty of 15 years when Trek water base Polyurethane is estimated for.
Cons
Limited range of colors and
polyurethane lusters.
Eased edge (the seams
between each board) creates a cleaning or maintenance concern, and
square-edged products always have some height differences between
boards. It is not as smooth.
Cons
Cannot walk on the floor
during the 4 - 5 day sanding and finishing process.
Creates more dust and dirt.
Odors from the stains and
polyurethanes can sometimes be annoying.
It may be more difficult to
blend in repairs.
Cannot walk on floors until
evening with watebase finish.
