Use protective mats at the exterior doors to prevent sand and grit from getting on floors.
We recommend humidifiers to be installed on heating systems for large area floors.
The use of furniture leg protectors is very important.  Protectors will allow furniture to move easier with less damage to hardwood.  Ensure that the protectors are cleaned routinely which will prevent grit build-up.  Even so, try never to scoot or drag heavy furniture or other items across your floor.
Never wet mop a hardwood floor.  Excessive water can cause wood to expand and damage.
Vacuum or dust-mop your hardwood floors regularly.
Our Poly Care floor cleaners and furniture leg protectors go a long way to minimize damage done to the floor by heavy (or often moved) furniture.
Keep high heel shoes in good repair.  Heels that have lost their protective caps can make significant scratches and dents in hardwood floors.
Dog toenails will damage your hardwood floors.
Clean up food spills in a timely manner using a dry or slightly damp cloth.  For tough spills, use a vinegar and warm water solution.

Restore Now!
Shoe marks:  use a household cleaner and a non-abrasive pad on marked area only.
Light surface scratches:   repaired by masking off the damaged area, lightly hand sand, wiping away dust and brushing or spraying on a fine coat of polyurethane.

Waxing:   This procedure is not necessary or recommended.  Once you wax a polyurethane finished floor, it is very difficult to recoat the floor because the new finish does not bond to the wax.  Once wax is used on the floor, you must continue to maintain the floor using wax.  Other examples of products which should not be used on polyurethane floors include: Murphy's Oil Soap and furniture polishes.

Complete Recoating: If necessary, the entire floor must be lightly abraded using the recommended 150 grit mesh screen.  The abrading will remove any foreign substance that could prevent the new finish from properly bonding (does not work on wax- finished floors).  Ensure that the floor is dust free by tacking with a damp cloth (do not use solvent tacking agents).  Finally, recoat the floor according to the manufacturer's instructions.  If the hardwood floor has been waxed, the only way to re-polyurethane the floor is to sand and refinish the entire floor.
